The BMW Motorrad R nineT was built to be customized. With its classic boxer engine, exposed mechanicals and relatively simple architecture, BMW’s modern retro roadster has become a favorite canvas for custom builders.
VTR Customs took that idea a step further with the BMW R nineT “Ninetini,” transforming the factory bike into a compact, muscular cafe racer with a distinctly race-inspired attitude.

VTR Customs is known for pushing BMW motorcycles toward a more purposeful, performance-focused aesthetic, and the Ninetini is a good example of that approach. Rather than simply adding traditional cafe racer accessories, the build gives the BMW R nineT a more cohesive visual identity. The result feels lower, tighter and more aggressive, while retaining the mechanical character that makes the boxer-powered BMW so appealing.

The cafe racer theme is clear, but the execution is contemporary. Clean bodywork, a purposeful riding position and carefully integrated details turn the R nineT into something that looks ready to attack a winding road.

A 1,170 cc Boxer at the Heart of the Build
Underneath the custom bodywork sits BMW’s familiar 1,170 cc air/oil-cooled boxer twin. The engine uses two camshafts and four radially arranged valves per cylinder, together with a central counterbalance shaft. It is fed by electronic port fuel injection and uses a closed-loop three-way catalytic converter.
The numbers are still impressive. The boxer produces 109 hp at 7,250 rpm and 85.5 lb-ft of torque at 6,000 rpm, while compression is set at 12.0:1. With a top speed of more than 124 mph, the R nineT has plenty of performance to match its custom appearance.
That combination gives the Ninetini something many custom motorcycles struggle to deliver: genuine performance underneath the styling.

Modern Performance, Classic Character
The appeal of the R nineT has always been the contrast between old-school motorcycle character and modern engineering. The boxer twin looks unmistakably mechanical, but the fuel injection, emissions control and electrical system are thoroughly contemporary.
The Ninetini preserves that balance. With 109 hp and 85.5 lb-ft of torque, the engine has more than enough muscle for a lightweight custom cafe racer. More importantly, the boxer configuration gives the motorcycle a distinctive personality that cannot be replicated by a conventional parallel twin or inline-four.

One of the hardest parts of modifying a modern motorcycle is knowing what to remove and what to leave alone. VTR Customs’ Ninetini works because the underlying BMW identity remains visible. The boxer engine is still the centerpiece, while the custom treatment changes the proportions and attitude around it.
That makes this more than a cosmetic exercise. The bike feels like a reinterpretation of the R nineT rather than a completely different motorcycle wearing BMW components.
The result is a BMW cafe racer with a modern edge: compact, purposeful and unmistakably European.

Electrical System
The R nineT’s electrical hardware is equally suited to everyday riding and customization. The bike uses a three-phase alternator rated at 720 watts and a 12-volt, 12 Ah battery.
It is another reminder that beneath the stripped-back appearance of the Ninetini is a fully modern motorcycle, combining the visual simplicity of a custom build with the technology expected from a contemporary BMW.

The VTR Customs Formula
The Ninetini demonstrates why the BMW R nineT has become such a popular platform for custom motorcycle builders. Its architecture provides a strong foundation, but there is enough visual and mechanical character for a builder to create something genuinely individual.
VTR Customs has taken those ingredients and pushed them toward a sharper cafe racer aesthetic without sacrificing the bike’s core appeal. The result is a motorcycle that feels purposeful rather than merely decorative.

The BMW R nineT Ninetini is therefore not about turning a modern motorcycle into a nostalgic replica. It is about taking BMW’s classic boxer formula and giving it a more focused, contemporary interpretation.
And that may be the best kind of cafe racer: one that looks fast standing still, but still has the performance to back it up.
