Indian history

Indian Motorcycles is a brand that has been around for over a century. It all started in 1901, when George M. Hendee, a bicycle racing champion, partnered with Carl Oscar Hedström, a talented engineer. Together, they founded the Hendee Manufacturing Company in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Initially, the company produced bicycles known as the “Indian” brand, and in 1902, they introduced a gasoline-powered motorcycle. With a single-cylinder engine that produced 1.75 horsepower and had a top speed of 25 mph.

The Indian Motorcycle Company quickly grew in popularity and success, and by 1903, they were producing over 500 motorcycles annually. In 1909, Indian introduced the first V-twin motorcycle, which was capable of reaching speeds of up to 60 mph.

Throughout the years, Indian continued to innovate and introduce new models. In 1911, they introduced the famous “Indian Head” logo, which has become an iconic symbol of the brand. In 1920, Indian unveiled the Scout, a lightweight model that was designed to compete with Harley-Davidson’s Sportster.

During World War II

Indian Motorcycles played a crucial role in the war effort, producing over 30,000 military motorcycles for the United States Army. After the war, Indian struggled to keep up with the competition, and in 1953, the company filed for bankruptcy.

Over the years, the Indian brand changed hands numerous times, and various attempts were made to revive the brand. In 2011, Polaris Industries purchased the Indian Motorcycle Company and introduced a new lineup of motorcycles.

The new Indian motorcycles utilized modern technology and design, while still paying homage to the brand’s rich history and tradition. The latest models include the Scout, Chief, Chieftain, and Roadmaster, which are all built in the United States.

Today

Although the brand has had its ups and downs over the years, Indian Motorcycles remains an iconic and beloved brand that continues to inspire motorcycle enthusiasts all over the world.
