If you’re looking to truly live up to the name of a ‘Carte Blanche’, you’ll need to put in a bit of effort – and a visit to Rick’s Motorcycles is highly recommended!

While many people crave a colorful life, for a number of Harley riders, black and white is more than enough. This is definitely the case with the highly modified “Fat Bob” you see here!

Thanks to Rick’s, this FXFBS Milwaukee Eight Softail conversion is a super-clean powerhouse. It’s refined in every way, without being too overloaded – Rick’s “elegance” at its finest.

While the traditional “Fat Bob” design saw a complete overhaul, the Rick’s team added yet another layer of customization to this stock Harley look: a “Fat Look” of the very best kind. With epic proportions and an air suspension for an extremely low seating position, the Rick’s design wheel set of stylish three-piece assembled disc wheels is where the journey truly takes off.

Many components on this custom Harley remained in their original, stock condition because the bike itself already has a top-of-the-line rolling chassis, upside down fork, and dragster-like acceleration. The added Rick’s “Fat Ass” swingarm allows for “Dragstrip” tire dimensions, without sacrificing the riding characteristics of this highly customized street bike.

What’s more, the metal fender above the 300 rubber tire is as close as possible when needed thanks to the Air Suspension.

Over the massive 10.5-inch rim width, the 300 tire spreads out to a truly dominant size – and even the KessTech adjustable Sound System is short as it is, you still have an unrestricted view of the tire and wheel.

The seat and tank-to-seat cover provide the perfect visual connection to the stock fuel tank. At the front end, Rick’s front mudguard is as close as possible to the radius of the 18-inch front tire, making it one of the cleanest installations available.

The sidemount license plate bracket and other small details all contribute to this custom job, and everything is refined in black paint or powder coated.

The only parts that are kept in matte white color are the body parts – the stock fuel tank, Rick’s rear fender, and front fender. In the darkened look, the Rick’s Softail covers on the front wheel axle almost disappear entirely.

Every Rick’s project starts with a blank sheet of paper – and if you want to achieve this level of customization for your “Fat Bob,” you should give the Rick’s team full creative license. The result will be something you’ll want to show off and blast off with pride!

The Harley-Davidson Fat Bob models are a favourite at Rick’s when it comes to selecting a basis for another customizing project. There is by now a comprehensive parts program that was developed in Baden-Baden for all Softail models which are fired up by Milwaukee-Eight motors. Part of this is, in addition to fender kits, the swingarm kit with which tire widths of up to 300 can be used.

Almost all the parts on this bike have, of course, been made by Rick’s Motorcycles, but nevertheless we would like to mention them. The most striking should be the huge Metzeler rear tire, which, with a dimension of 300/35-18 inches, naturally does not fit into the stock swingarm. In order to make it fit, a somewhat larger trick needs to be performed. For this purpose, Rick’s makes its own swingarm kit, which deserves to be looked at a bit closer.

With Rick’s swingarm, the belt drive is located to the outside, which enables the tire to be placed centrally in the bike. In order to transfer the power from the gearbox exit shaft to the rear wheel, the offset has to be bridged. On Rick’s shaft the power is transmitted via a short belt to an intermediate shaft, positioned to the outside accordingly, and on to another belt which carries it to the rear wheel pulley. The result is amazing and absolutely rideable, and especially because the rear wheel does not need an offset, the bike is very capable in bends.

The rear brake was relocated to the gearbox side, which enables an unobstructed view onto the rear wheel. The wheels on this Fat Boy are also from Rick’s and the design of the 3-part screwed together eye-catchers is called ‘Rival’ and has at the front a dimension of 4,5 x 18 inches, for the rear wheel 10,5 x 18 inches were chosen.

A smallish wheel cover had to be added, and the manufacturer of the fenders should be obvious. The rear fender is available as a kit and includes mounting material, seat base plate and tank cover. Special on this version are the air intakes, which give this version the additional name of “Race”. The front fender is made by Rick’s from the finest steel in two different lengths.

Let’s now look at the accessories on this bike, most of which are made by Rick’s Motorcycles, starting with the air filter with the name “Spoke”. Rick’s has a further seven designs in its program which are available for different models and model years. Handlebar and grips are also Made by Rick’s, as well as the risers into which the handlebar is secured.

If you are searching for the indicators and the rear lights, have a closer look. At the rear, Kellermann Atto 3 in 1 indicators were screwed directly into the fender struts. Indicator, rear and brake light are in a housing with a mere 10 mm diameter. The small lights come with an E-test certificate and can be used legally on the road. The Attos at the front are fixed with Rick’s holders below the dashboard to the mirror screw. A last small detail is the derby cover from Rick’s, which has a transparent Makrolon window that allows a clear view onto the rotating clutch parts.

The 2018 Fat Bob is already a stunner coming out of the factory and could easily be used in the stock version. But at Rick’s they are always thinking about how they can make something good even better and more beautiful, so it’s no surprise that also this Harley-Davidson Softail was customized to give it an even better look.

When looking at this custom bike, the focus should be on the rear. Apart from the fact that they already have rear fenders for all Milwaukee-Eight Softails for the different wheel dimensions in the program at Baden-Baden, now also a version is available into which the housing for a break/rear light combination has been integrated. This is already on offer for Evo and Twin Cam fenders for different lights but is now also available for the new Softails. The fender is handmade and optionally available as a separate part or as a kit with seat base plate and mounting kit.

The rear light is, therefore, right in the center, and so that no proportionally too large indicator housing disturbs the whole look, a brand-new Kellermann indicator was chosen. The cone shaped housing of the Kellermann Atto has a 10 mm diameter and thanks to modern LED technical ability enormous lighting power. On request it is available as a 3:1 solution with rear light, brake light and indicators in one housing. At least as important as size and design is the fact that they are E-tested and legal on the road.

If you got stuck looking at the front fender, you may wonder that this seems very similar to the stock version, but still looks different, and this is because Rick’s version sits closer to the tire and fits better with the radius.

Some parts that were used on this bike are true Rick’s classics which were adapted for the new Softails, for example the air filter, which is now on offer in all of Rick’s designs for the Milwaukee-Eight models, and that with TÜV certificate. Even in combination with a Vance & Hines exhaust system the operating certificate is still valid.
